General Dynamics achieves 45x faster consolidation with OneStream

About this video

General Dynamics, an aerospace and defense company headquartered in Reston, Virginia, had been on HFM for years but faced growing consolidation challenges. With ten business units each running their own ERP systems, consolidations were taking up to 45 minutes to run and data loading errors consumed significant Finance team time that should have been spent on analysis.

OneStream reduced consolidation time from 45 minutes to one minute while eliminating the data integrity issues that previously slowed the team down. With guided reporting, narrative reporting, cube views, and extensible dimensionality now supporting their stakeholder reporting, General Dynamics Finance teams spend their time driving value rather than chasing where data went.

Key takeaways

  1. Consolidation time dropped from 45 minutes to one minute after moving from HFM to OneStream. For a company consolidating ten business units across separate ERP systems, that processing gain alone transformed what Finance could accomplish each close cycle.
  2. Data loading errors that once consumed significant Finance team time have been eliminated by OneStream's intuitive design. Teams no longer spend hours tracking down missing data or retraining users on how to load information correctly into the system.
  3. Ten business units with separate ERP systems now consolidate, translate, and roll up into one unified platform. Guided reporting, narrative reporting, cube views, and report books give General Dynamics the tools to present information clearly to any stakeholder.
  4. Extensible dimensionality gives General Dynamics the flexibility they need across budget and application reporting. The ability to build the right level of data granularity into actuals has been a significant and ongoing benefit for the Finance team.
  5. The OneStream Solution Exchange is a meaningful time saver for teams exploring new capabilities. The ability to download, test, and immediately use pre-built solutions reduces the risk and effort of evaluating new functionality before committing to a full build.

My name is Neil Connors. I'm a manager of financial systems at General Dynamics. We're a aerospace and defense company headquartered out in Reston, Virginia. What brought us to really consider OneStream was that we've been on HFM for a long time, but times change, you have to adapt to new technologies. Our consolidation times were running a bit long, so it could be up to 45 minutes to run a single consolidation. We would have a lot of people loading data and it just disappearing, so we would spend a lot of our time trying to find out where the data went and try to teach people how to put that data in correctly. So now with OneStream, it's very intuitive, very easy to use. The benefits we've received are countless using OneStream for consolidation. Mostly we have ten business units that have their own ERP systems. We consolidate all that information, translate it and roll it on up. So we have a lot of reporting tools that we use in OneStream, such as guided reporting, narrative reporting. A lot of cube views, a lot of report books that help us display our information to any stakeholders. It allows us to data granularity and actuals. We've really enjoyed the amount of flexibility that extensible dimensionality allows for us in our budget and application. A OneStream has the the marketplace out there, OneStream Solution Exchange, and they have a lot of solutions that you can just download and start using right away. Test it out if you're not sure about it. A huge time saver. The key metrics that we look at would be processing time for us, that that's been a huge win for us, as we're talking about going for 45 minutes to consolidate to a minute. It really lets them drive more value, instead of just checking numbers and making sure that they loaded everything correctly I think it speaks the intuitive nature of how OneStream is designed.
